EV charger on detached garage wall

For years, I was firmly in the “not for us” camp when it came to solar panels. Despite having a perfectly positioned south-facing roof, I’d heard one too many horror stories of botched installations, companies that vanished overnight, and the struggle to find reliable installers who actually knew what they were doing. It all felt like too much of a gamble.

But eventually, curiosity (and rising energy costs!) got the better of us. If we were going to do it, we were going all in, and that’s exactly what we did. With help from Lincs Renewables, we had 16 solar panels installed, along with two batteries and an EV charger. No half measures.

The solar installation was impressively neat and efficient. Even the EV charger, which had to be fitted to a detached garage wall, not the simplest of spots, went in exactly where we wanted it, no fuss. Suddenly, we were driving a fully electric car and discovering the benefits of overnight charging. Fuel station visits became a thing of the past.

So, what’s changed?

Naturally, our energy usage has increased with the EV, but surprisingly, our overall costs have dropped. A switch to Octopus Energy, using their Intelligent Octopus Go and Outgoing Octopus tariffs, brought our combined monthly energy bill for electricity and gas down to just £30 for six months of the year. Yes, you read that right, thirty pounds! That’s a huge saving, not just on energy, but also on diesel.

In 2024, we exported £322 worth of electricity back to the grid. In 2025 so far £565 and counting. That’s helped us slash over £800 off our annual energy spend while giving us 20,000 EV miles essentially for free.

We always knew this was a long-term investment, but with results like this, and the sun shining more than ever, the payback is arriving faster than expected. Solar sceptic no more!

Why Solar Panels Are a Smart Investment for Your Home

Installing solar panels is more than a cost-saving upgrade, it’s a long-term investment in sustainability and energy independence. By generating your own renewable energy, you can significantly reduce your reliance on the grid and save up to £982 a year on electricity bills, helping protect your household from rising energy costs.

Solar systems can also improve your home’s energy security. When paired with a battery, they provide reliable backup power during outages, keeping essential appliances running when the grid goes down.

Beyond the financial and practical benefits, solar panels can increase your property’s appeal and value. As energy efficiency becomes a key priority for buyers, homes with solar installations stand out as modern, future-focused and environmentally responsible.
