Hot Water Diverter Installations

Get more from your solar PV - enjoy free, solar-powered hot water with the Myenergy Eddi hot water diverter

If you already have solar PV installed, there’s a good chance some of your free, clean electricity is being exported to the grid unused. A hot water diverter stops that from happening.

The Myenergi Eddi intelligently redirects your leftover solar energy into heating your hot water cylinder, meaning you rely less on gas or grid electricity and get even more value from your solar system.

This allows Eddi to keep any surplus energy that isn’t currently being used, leaving it readily available for use during times of higher demand.

Why Customers Love the Eddi

  • Cut the cost of heating your water dramatically.
  • Increase your self-consumption and lower grid reliance.
  • Make your solar investment work harder for you.
  • Installed by our local MCS-certified engineers.
  • Fully compatible with the Myenergi eco-system (Zappi + Harvi).

Is a Hot Water Diverter Right for Me?

Studies show that many households consume under half of the renewable energy they generate, with the surplus typically sent back to the grid. A hot water diverter changes this by intelligently diverting excess power for use within the home, cutting down on wasted energy, increasing self-use and helping to lower energy costs.

Most homeowners with a hot water cylinder will benefit – especially if you regularly export energy, want faster payback or don’t have a battery.

How the Eddi Works

The Eddi is a micro-generation diverter switch. Unlike a simple timer, it constantly monitors the electricity flowing in and out of your home using a small clip-on sensor.

The Eddi then monitors electricity flow in real time. When the solar PV array is generating more power than your house is using – let’s say, your dishwasher is off – the Eddi detects this excess electricity. Instead of letting that energy be exported back to the grid, the Eddi smoothly and proportionally diverts that surplus power directly to your immersion heater element.

The Eddi works perfectly with the Myenergi Zappi EV charger and Harvi devices, creating a fully integrated eco-system for your home’s energy management.

Choose the Right Solar Package for You

We understand that every property and energy requirement is different, which is why we offer a range of flexible solar packages. We offer hot water diverters in our level 4 and level 5 packages as seen below, or we can install a diverter to your existing solar panel system:

Package 4

A smart addition to a standard solar panel, inverter and battery system. Instead of sending excess electricity back to the grid once your batteries are full, the diverter directs it to your immersion heater to help heat your hot water. This reduces demand on your conventional hot water system, making your home even more energy efficient.

Package 5

The ultimate setup for an environmentally friendly home or business. This package includes solar panels, battery storage, a hot water diverter, and a compatible EV charger. Your solar-generated power can now charge your electric vehicle, helping you save on transport energy while living sustainably.

FAQs about Hot Water Diverters

How does a hot water diverter work with solar PV

A hot water diverter monitors both your solar panel generation and your household electricity usage in real time. When your solar PV system produces more electricity than your home is using, the diverter automatically redirects that surplus energy to your immersion heater, heating your hot water instead of exporting the electricity back to the grid.

What system do I need to install a hot water diverter?

To benefit from a hot water diverter, you must have solar PV panels installed and a traditional hot water cylinder with an immersion heater. Homes that rely solely on a combi boiler are not suitable unless a hot water tank is added to the system.

When is a hot water diverter most effective?

Hot water diverters work best during periods of strong solar generation and low household electricity demand, typically on sunny days or during spring and summer months. While they are less effective in winter, they can still capture useful surplus energy whenever it’s available.

Can a hot water diverter power other appliances?

A hot water diverter’s primary function is heating water using excess solar electricity. It does not power household appliances directly. However, some advanced systems can work alongside solar batteries or storage heaters as part of a wider home energy management setup.

What are the limitations of a hot water diverter?

Hot water diverters use surplus solar energy instantly rather than storing it for later use. They also need to be installed relatively close to the hot water cylinder – usually within 30 metres – and are most beneficial in homes that regularly export excess solar electricity.

Is a hot water diverter worth the investment?

For many homeowners, a hot water diverter is a highly cost-effective way to increase solar self-consumption. They are significantly cheaper than solar battery systems and can dramatically reduce the cost of heating water by using free, renewable solar energy that would otherwise be wasted.
